OUR MISSION

The mission of BCOI is to be able to provide breast care services to the thousands of people who presently are deemed “underserved” due to limited insurance or financial resources to obtain breast cancer screenings and other related testing. We do not discriminate based upon sexual preference, immigration status and the like.

WHY

The American Cancer Society has published many statistics on various types of cancers. 30% of all new cancer cases in women will be breast cancer. 1 in 8 women have a lifetime probability of developing breast cancer. Breast cancer survival rates are now at 91% if detected early. Approximately 43,000 deaths will occur this year from breast cancer. Breast cancer typically produces no symptoms when the tumor is small and most easily treated, which is why screening is important for early detection.

Breast cancer is typically detected either during a screening examination, before symptoms have developed, or after a woman notices a lump. Most masses seen on a mammogram and most breast lumps turn out to be benign (not cancerous), do not grow uncontrollably or spread, and are not life-threatening. When cancer is suspected, microscopic analysis of breast tissue is necessary for a diagnosis and to determine the extent of spread (stage) and characterize the type of the disease. The tissue for microscopic analysis can be obtained from a needle biopsy (fine-needle or wider core needle) or surgical incision. Selection of the type of biopsy is based on multiple factors, including the size and location of the mass, as well as patient factors and preferences and resources. These are two of the services we perform at the Breast Center.

OUR HISTORY

The Breast Center of Irvine has been in continuous operation since 2010, in Irvine California. It was opened as an integral component of KSK Medical, operating as the Cancer Center of Irvine since 2000. KSK Medical is a large, private medical practice founded by Dr. Kenneth Tokita. Its Centers include: Cancer Center, Procedure Center, Imaging Center and the Breast Center.

All of these Centers are fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technologies. The synergies between each center, and the related treatments offered, created a very successful private practice.

As part of the continuous upgrading of capabilities, the Breast Center invested in new 3D Mammography equipment and technology. The Breast Center was an early adopter of what is now more widely used.

Given this technology was housed in a “for-profit” environment, its use was limited to the traditional patient flow – private insurance or cash. This limited the broader reach into the community.

In December 2018, the Medici Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, was asked by Dr. Tokita to review how to more fully utilize the Breast Center for the greater good of the community as he strongly feels the importance of community outreach.  Dr. Tokita would relinquish control of the Breast Center, if the Center could successfully serve the broader underserved community.

The objective is to establish the Breast Center as a non-profit with the goal of providing mammograms and other screenings to referred patients regardless of insurance or financial barriers.

In March of 2019, the decision was made to go all out to identify funding pools, non-profit referral networks and patient populations to open up the Breast Center as a community non-profit. As part of the funding push, the Medici Foundation has agreed to match all funding received for the Breast Center in 2019.

In April 2019, the Breast Center was incorporated as a stand alone entity.

In July, 2019, the IRS issued its determination letter approving the Breast Center as a 501(c)(3) organization.
